Why does a commercial fridge leak water?
Water on the floor does not always mean the fridge has stopped cooling. Condensate and defrost water need a clear route out of the cabinet. A drainage fault can cause a leak even when the cooling system appears to be working.
Where the water may be coming from
Possible causes include a blocked drain, a displaced drain hose, a damaged tray or failed cabinet seals. Frequent opening and humid conditions can add condensation. Ice melting after a cooling or defrost problem can also produce water. The source needs tracing before a repair is chosen.
A real field example: blocked chiller drain
On a reported chiller leak, Ramazan found the drain blocked and water sitting in the bottom of the cabinet. He cleared the drain by prolonged vacuuming, then poured water into the drainage path to test it. Water flowed after cleaning and no further leak was observed during the test.
That water test was the confirmation for the drain repair. It was not a pressure test or a refrigerant leak check, and it does not establish long-term performance beyond the visit.
Why cleaning up the puddle is only the first step
Mopping removes the immediate water, but a blocked drain can refill the cabinet. An engineer traces the water path and checks for obstructions, damage and incorrect drainage. If a leak appears only during defrost, observing that part of the cycle can help identify the source.
What to do while waiting
- Keep people away from the wet area and manage the slip hazard.
- Record the temperature and whether the leak is continuous or intermittent.
- Check whether the door closes and visible air vents are obstructed.
- If water reaches electrical parts, keep clear and arrange urgent assistance. Use a safe, accessible isolator only if you can do so without approaching the water.
Do not remove electrical covers or push tools into hidden drain openings. Follow the equipment manual for any routine cleaning you are authorised to carry out.
What a useful service report should record
The location of the water, the confirmed obstruction or damage, what was repaired, and how the drainage was tested. If temperature recovery or a later defrost cycle was not checked, the report should say so.
